What exactly is a royalty split?

A royalty split is simply an agreement about how earnings from a song get divided between everyone who helped make it — writers, producers, managers, featured artists, whoever had a hand in it.

You set the percentages, and HyDistro handles the rest: once a split is configured, every contributor is paid their agreed share automatically, with no manual transfers required.

Your Full Picture

See exactly where you stand.

Every artist gets a clear view of what's flowing out to collaborators, what's flowing in from splits on other people's releases, and where that nets out overall.

A practical guide to splitting royalties with collaborators.

Putting out a release single-handedly is tough, so most projects these days pull in help from multiple people. As valuable as that collaboration is, it comes with a responsibility: making sure everyone who contributed is compensated fairly.

What are songwriter splits?

Songwriter splits describe how royalty income gets divided among the writers and other stakeholders behind a song.

When more than one songwriter works on a track, deciding how to divide the royalty payments matters. These splits are typically expressed as percentages, with each writer's share tied to how much they actually contributed — though the exact numbers always depend on what the writers agree to between themselves.

To keep things drama-free later on, spell out the agreement clearly up front. Clear communication before the work begins is what keeps every songwriter's contribution fairly compensated. We'll dig into how to land on the right percentages shortly.

What are producer splits?

Just like songwriters divide their royalties, producer splits are the share of royalties divided between the artist and the producer(s) who worked on a piece of music.

This income typically comes from streaming platforms, radio spins, downloads, and any sync licensing deals that get signed.

Producers commonly take home somewhere around 15–20% of an artist's royalty share. That said, nothing here is fixed — the number moves depending on the producer's profile and the artist's situation. Independent and DIY artists in particular tend to offer producers a larger cut.

What moves the numbers.

Producers wear a lot of hats on a project, and every hat they wear can shift the split — depending on how hands-on they were, what's typical in the industry right now, and how sharp everyone's negotiating is.

It's also standard for producers to take home both an upfront fee and ongoing royalties, with the split agreed before a single note is recorded.

How involved they were

Naturally, the deeper your producers and writers get into a project, the bigger the cut of your royalties they'll expect.

Hand off songwriting duties or other creative work, and you should expect to give up a larger percentage than if you'd handled it solo.

Their standing in the industry

Contributors with a strong reputation or a run of successful projects behind them tend to negotiate for bigger splits and higher pay.

You'll be choosing between a newcomer with barely any credits — or paying more for someone whose name basically guarantees results. Then again, a premium price tag doesn't always translate into a better outcome than going with a cheaper option would.

Relationships with artists & labels

Solid relationships across the industry — particularly with other producers, artists, and labels — can help you land better, fairer split terms. It also gives you a network of people you can check in with when you're trying to gauge whether a given contributor is the right fit for your project.

Market conditions

Beyond a contributor's own track record, the broader state of the music industry has an effect on your split negotiations too.

Genre trends and demand for particular sounds can shift the conversation significantly. Look at the recent wave of dance-influenced production across genres — it's meant producers working in that space can often charge more for their input.

Splitting your royalties, step by step.

To sidestep awkward conversations later, we'd recommend locking in your royalty split agreements before recording even starts. Getting everyone's expectations on paper early avoids disputes once the money starts coming in.

Fairness and transparency matter more than ever in music right now, especially with AI-generated content stirring things up.

Royalty splits reflect just how collaborative making music really is. Getting comfortable with how they work — and running fair, transparent negotiations — protects everyone's contribution.

How It Works

Splitting royalties, made simple.

Getting automated splits running takes minutes, not meetings — here's exactly how it flows.

01

Upload your release

Distribute your track, EP, or album to HyDistro as normal. Every release you submit becomes available inside Royalty Splits automatically — no separate setup needed.

02

Pick a release in Royalty Splits

Head to the Royalty Splits tab in your dashboard and choose the release you want to split. You can apply a split to a whole EP or album, or just one specific track — your call, per split.

03

Invite collaborators by email

Add each collaborator's email address and set their percentage. They'll receive an invite to review and accept the split you've set up.

04

They accept, and it's automatic from there

Once a collaborator accepts, their share is locked in. From that point on, every payout is divided automatically — their portion lands directly in their HyDistro wallet, no manual transfers, ever.

Royalty Splits FAQs.

To create and manage splits on your own releases, yes — Royalty Splits is included free on Starter and above, with no extra cost on top of your subscription. Collaborators you invite are different: they never need a paid plan themselves to accept a split, receive their share, or withdraw it.
Yes. When creating a split, you can choose to apply it to the entire release or to one specific track — so different collaborators can be split differently across the same project.
Any splits you've already set up stay exactly as they are — a split is tied to the release, not to your subscription, so existing collaborators keep getting paid. Cancelling your plan just means you'd need to reactivate Starter or above to create any new splits going forward.
HyDistro notifies the collaborator, and they must approve the cancellation before it takes effect — a split can't be cancelled unilaterally once it's been accepted.
Not directly — an active split with a collaborator can't be edited on your own once it's accepted. If it needs to change, contact support. You can, however, add more collaborators to a release with an active split at any time.
They can still be invited to a split with just their email. Whatever they're owed sits waiting for them — the moment they sign up for a free account, it lands straight in their wallet.
Yes. Every collaborator gets their own view showing what they're owed from splits they're part of, what they owe out on their own releases, and their overall net position across everything.
Withdrawal minimums follow the same rules as any other HyDistro wallet balance, and depend on the collaborator's own plan and withdrawal currency.
